While the fillings are  very durable, none of the filling material lasts a life time; a filling will likely need replacing at some point in the future. One of the main factors that determine how long a filling lasts is the material used to fill the tooth.

Even though we use highest quality filling materials but still all materials weaken over time naturally, some weaken faster than the others.  The other main cause is habits of patient, like clenching, grinding (bruxism) which can lead to trauma to filling material thus leading to its dislodgement or fracture. Many fillings fail due to the foods we eat. Chewy, sticky foods as well as hard, crunchy snacks such as popcorn and pretzels are some of the most common causes of loose or lost fillings.

The type of filling you have may determine how long it lasts, which could range from 5 to 15 years     (if patient does not clench or brux). Sometimes only regular dental checkups can help you determine when a filling might have to be replaced.

If patient is willing, there is no limit to the number of fillings you can get in one session.

There are several reasons one get more cavities than the other people which include: genetics, high sugar intake, improper oral hygiene, tooth structure with deep pits and fissures etc. Every person is different from other.

No, there are variety of treatments available for dental caries depending on severity of symptoms and extension of caries. If caries is in very early stage without any cavity, a fluoride treatment may help restore your tooth's enamel and can sometimes reverse a cavity in the very early stage. Some grossly carious teeth might need restoration with root canal therapy or extraction. Only your dentist can decide which option can be given.
